Topic 3.8 · The Tangent Function

Use tangent's zeros, adjacent asymptotes and period to recover a transformation without confusing gaps with roots.

For basic tangent, zeros are x=nπx=n\pi and excluded inputs are x=π/2+nπx=\pi/2+n\pi, with integer nn. For Atan⁡(B(x−h))+DA\tan(B(x-h))+D, nonzero A,BA,B give period π/∣B∣\pi/|B|; adjacent asymptotes are one full period apart. Use the complete transformed formula for its zeros. The sliders are parameter controls, not coordinate arrows.

Tangent gaps are distinguished from zeros, adjacent asymptotes determine horizontal scale, and shifts are checked separately.

What a strong response shows

  • Tangent is undefined where its cosine denominator is zero; those inputs are not zeros.

  • Use P=π/∣b∣P=\pi/|b| for tangent, not the sinecosine\frac{\text{sine}}{\text{cosine}} period rule.

  • A horizontal shift moves both zeros and asymptotes; substitute one visible zero to check the shift.

What You Need to Know

Key idea

Tangent is the ratio of sine to cosine, so it is undefined wherever cosine is zero.

Fast decision rule

Find zeros of cosine before sketching tangent branches.

Worked steps

Use the unit circle to locate angles where the horizontal coordinate is zero, then place asymptotes and sketch each branch.

Common mistake

Drawing tangent as a bounded wave like sine.

Mini check

Why does tangent have vertical asymptotes?

02

Learning Objectives

Key idea

3.8.A — Construct representations of the tangent function using the unit circle. 3.8.B — Describe key characteristics of the tangent function. 3.8.C — Describe additive and multiplicative transformations involving the tangent function.

Fast decision rule

Use the unit circle for construction and the branch pattern for characteristics or transformations.

Worked steps

11. Locate one branch center. 22. Find nearby asymptotes. 33. Repeat by the period. 44. Apply shifts and scales.

Common mistake

Using sine’s period without checking tangent’s repeat.

Mini check

What is the basic tangent period?

03

Key Concepts

Key idea

The tangent graph has repeating increasing branches separated by vertical asymptotes and an unbounded range.

Fast decision rule

Asymptotes split the domain into branches; never connect across one.

Worked steps

Mark the center crossing, draw asymptote boundaries, and sketch the increasing branch on each interval.

Common mistake

Connecting the left and right sides through an asymptote.

Mini check

What happens to tangent near an asymptote?

04

Relevant Representations

Key idea

Unit-circle ratios, branch graphs, and transformation parameters describe tangent together.

asymptoteswhere cosine is zero
center crossingwhere tangent is zero
Fast decision rule

Use the unit circle for location and the graph for domain and range.

Worked steps

Match a tangent branch to the angles where cosine is positive or negative, then locate the center and boundaries.

Common mistake

Reading a branch’s center as an asymptote.

Mini check

Which graph feature repeats from branch to branch?

05

Essential Relationships or Formulas

Key idea

Tangent’s quotient definition explains its domain and asymptotes.

tan⁡θ=sin⁡θcos⁡θ\tan\theta=\frac{\sin\theta}{\cos\theta}
Ptan⁡=πP_{\tan}=\pi
range⁡(tan⁡)=R\operatorname{range}(\tan)=\mathbb{R}
Fast decision rule

Set the denominator to zero to locate excluded inputs.

Worked steps

Solve the cosine-zero condition, mark those x-values as asymptotes, and use the next zero of tangent as the branch center.

Common mistake

Listing asymptotes where sine is zero.

Mini check

Which function’s zeros create tangent asymptotes?

06

Worked Examples

Key idea

A transformed tangent graph can be built from one branch and its boundaries.

Fast decision rule

Find center, period, and asymptotes before drawing the branch.

Worked steps

If a positive horizontal input scale halves the basic tangent period, the new period is π2\frac{\pi}{2}. Adjacent asymptotes are one full new period apart, each half a period from the branch center. Draw the increasing branch between them.

Common mistake

Scaling the asymptotes vertically.

Mini check

Which transformation changes horizontal spacing?

07

Common Mistakes

Key idea

Tangent mistakes come from confusing reciprocal relationships with vertical stretches.

Fast decision rule

Check denominator, asymptotes, and period separately.

Worked steps

Use a sign chart around an asymptote to confirm the branch directions.

Common mistake

Assigning a finite value at an asymptote.

Mini check

What notation should show that an input is excluded?

08

AP Exam Tips

Key idea

A tangent response should name its domain restrictions, period, and range.

Practice

Use the Questionbank set below to test this skill.

Fast decision rule

Sketch only within branch intervals and label asymptotes clearly.

Worked steps

State the branch center and neighboring asymptotes as evidence for the graph.

Common mistake

Describing tangent with amplitude, since it is unbounded.

Mini check

Which characteristic replaces amplitude for tangent?

TRY IT IN A NEW SETTING

Can you transfer the method?

A tangent graph has zeros at −π-\pi and π\pi, with asymptotes at −2π,0,2π-2\pi,0,2\pi. Find a model h(x)=tan⁡(b(x+c))h(x)=\tan(b(x+c)) with positive bb.

Compare your reasoning

The period is 2π2\pi, so b=1/2b=1/2. Taking c=πc=\pi gives h(x)=tan⁡((x+π)/2)h(x)=\tan((x+\pi)/2), which has the required zeros and asymptotes.

Use it in a real question

Work independently, then compare the mathematical evidence in your answer.
